Things are not going the best for us video wise. I am currently sitting in 408 Stv, uploading vids but I’m having technical difficulties. The computer I’m working on captured the video, but when I pull it up the video won’t play. I also tried two other computers one which froze while it was uploading the video and the other one won’t recognize that the camera is plugged in. So we basically have one video that MIGHT play.

Other than that, I emailed Roxanne from Oui We Wii about setting up an interview in the next week or so and she replied! We just have to work out exactly what time would be good for us.

I was wondering if we could go over how to upload the video and transfer it to another computer. It might just be that I’m bad luck but nothing seems to be working for me. The same thing happened to me in class last week too.

We report on the findings from a two-year program-wide assessment of the digital writing
curriculum and student learning at Miami University that was comprised of four components: (1)
a direct assessment of student writing; (2) pre- and post-surveys (n=1,000 students), addressing
multimodal composing, online research, and rhetorical concepts; (3) process- and discoursebased
interviews with students discussing specific writing projects (e.g., audio essays, blogs,
websites); and (4) video interviews with students, discussing their perceptions of the new laptop
classrooms and the digital curriculum.

1. Interview Heidi McKee, Cythia Lewiecki-Wilson, Wioleta Fedeczko, and Kerrie Carsey from session E. These are the students who the speaker is talking about. Ask them about their teacher and student relationship.

2. Interview Kyle Mattson about new technology such as facebook and myspace. Ask him how involved he is in the material.

3. I’m not quite certain who, but I would like to question one of the older professors in the field about the training they had to go through and how involved they were in new media, prior to their training.

4. I have a teacher who has a facebook who friends all of her students. I would like to maybe interview her.

5. I think we should also video record us and our peers from class about our overall opinion of the class, what we learned from Cheryl (and Andrew), and what we feel that we taught Cheryl (and Andrew?) in return.

Some reading would also be required…. I haven’t looked up any texts yet though. I saw Katie did and I think those would all most definitely be good texts to read before we conduct our interviews.

Hey guys! This is my intro from the first day of class. I think it took me entirely too long to actually figure out how to do this assignment.

What Do I Look For When I Read?

I never was really asked to specifically talk about what I look for when I read and for this reason I never really thought that I looked for anything. Throughout my high school career, my teachers told me what to look for. Usually it was the literary elements that were included in the text. My teachers in high school had me look through the lens of New Criticism. For those of you who do not know what that is, it is the throwing out of an idea that there is an author or even an outside world. Everything you need to know is in the text and only in the text. My reading of a text has been sculpted so that I mainly use the lens of new criticism. In college, the teachers encourage us to look through all different types of lenses but I find myself continuously going back to the lens of new criticism. Therefore, the first thing I look for would be the literary elements contained in a text without knowing anything else about it. These literary elements would include personification, imagery, setting, and theme.

The Second thing I look for is the tone of the novel. The tone to me, as to most people I think, is the overall feel of the text. This may sound kind of dumb since the tone should be a no brainer and it usually is, but I need to know the tone in order to know what emotions I should be feeling when I’m reading the text. Should I be happy? Should I be sad? Should I be laughing or should I be crying? Only once I know the tone, can I know how I should feel.

The Third thing that I look for is the plot. This basically means me just reading the story for enjoyment. I try to read the plot and ignore the literary elements. I love reading a story and just enjoying it. I like to just be enthralled in a text without having to analyze it and find the symbolism.

I feel like I’m closing a mini essay. This reminds me of a 5 paragraph format despite the fact that there is only 4 paragraphs. So I don’t think I will add a conclusion more than the one I’ve just written. Also, Andrew, I stole your idea of high lighting the points of what I look for when I read and I did not mean to steal your idea of new criticism, but it just so happens we both look for that while we read.
